Karate vs Jiu Jitsu
We often get this question from parents, on how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Karate differ, and why we find Jiu Jitsu to be a stronger, real world applicable, martial art. Let’s take a second and break down the key differences, as well as show the benefits and strengths of both.
Typically in a self-defense situation, it typically begins from the standing position, however as Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that is focused on ground defense parents may wonder how their child could benefit.
Kids Jiu Jitsu is focused on ground defense, we teach many techniques that will teach your child to take a potential threat to the ground with wrestling / grappling if they ever find themselves in a dangerous encounter. Since Jiu Jitsu has real world application as many have witnessed in MMA and UFC it shows how incredibly powerful the Martial Art is allowing the practitioner to control their opponent with very little effort.
As we have seen time and time again, Jiu Jitsu teaches us that size does not always matter in an encounter, and technique will prevail. A great visual example is in this video below.
Karate simply focuses on stand up fighting, and a technique that is not as applicable to real world combat as it was once thought. With mixed martial arts becoming increasingly popular, people understand that the days of a standard Karate stance are not practical.
Karate teaches you discipline, respect, and a mild workout, with the occasional showcase board breaks. However when applied to a real world scenario most of the techniques are not to be relied on.
Starting with the foot work and power generation of the hips, even from a striking standpoint Karate falls short to your famed combat sports such as Boxing, Muay Thai, and Kick Boxing.
In the early days of Mixed Martial Arts there were the occasional fighters that listed Karate as their training method, however as years have gone by it has shown that other martial arts such as Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai are more effective.
What do I do if my kid wants to learn standing self defense also?
Don’t worry we work standing work into all of our students lessons to teach them to be well rounded and confident in any altercation. However we always emphasize to focus back on the Jiu Jitsu to control the situation.
The practicality of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
As time has shown Jiu Jitsu is a very practical form of self defense. Your child will be learning take down techniques, proper footwork, position, grappling, and most of all a applicable self defense skill, that they can apply in the event of a hostile confrontation.
Karate has a very long and impressive history in the martial arts world. However your child could very easily walk away with a false confidence, which we find dangerous. Jiu Jitsu is the only martial art that allows you to train in a full speed combat scenario, giving your child a real sense of their true abilities.
Karate classes teach some great values to kids, however Jiu Jitsu classes do that and more. Not only will your child get a great workout at our Kids Jiu Jitsu program in Los Angeles, they will make some new friends and bond with their classmates.
Jiu Jitsu classes offer a very different environment than any other martial art. As the classes are live full speed sparring, students and instructors know that your safety is in the hands of your training partner. Having this trust in your Jiu Jitsu partner builds great long lasting friendships and respect.
